You can eat a “healthy” diet and still not be givi You can eat a “healthy” diet and still not be giving your body everything it needs.

I think this gets missed a lot because we've become so focused on healthy food that we sometimes forget to ask a much simpler question:

Is there enough of it?

You can choose high-quality healthy foods and still come up short on calories, protein, healthy fats, carbs, vitamins and/or minerals your body needs.

And this way of thinking can be especially common in perimenopause. After years of being told that the answer to weight gain is to eat less and exercise more, it's easy to start cutting calories even further when your body starts changing.

But your body still needs adequate nutrition—even when your hormones are changing.

And if you're already struggling with things like fatigue, hair loss, poor hormone function, digestive issues or difficulty building muscle, simply taking another supplement may not be the answer.

Sometimes we need to look at the foundation first.

Are you eating enough calories to create and sustain your energy?
Are you getting enough protein to build and maintain your muscle?
Are you getting enough dietary fat to support hormone production, brain function and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins?
Are you eating enough carbohydrates to support your energy needs and activity level?
Are you actually absorbing the nutrients you're eating?

Eating healthy doesn't automatically mean your body is getting what it needs.

Have you ever thought you were eating healthy, only to realize you may not have been eating enough?

Thyroid problem…or perimenopause?

Here's the frustrating part:

There can be a LOT of overlap between thyroid symptoms and the hormonal changes that happen during perimenopause. And sometimes, women get told it's one or the other without anyone really looking at the bigger picture.

But what if it's both?

Your thyroid doesn't stop mattering just because you're entering perimenopause.
And perimenopause doesn't become irrelevant just because you have a history of thyroid problems.

Hormonal changes can affect how you feel, how you sleep, your energy, your metabolism, and so much more.

And if you're suddenly feeling like your body has completely changed and you're being told,

“That's just getting older.”

I'd encourage you to ask a few more questions.

Because common for your age isn't necessarily normal.

And sometimes the answer isn't either/or.

It's both—and you deserve to know what you're actually dealing with.

Question the system. Educate yourself. Advocate for yourself.

When I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, I understoo When I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, I understood that it was an autoimmune condition.

What I didn't understand was what radioactive iodine (RAI), a treatment recommended to me, would actually mean for me long-term.

I was led to believe that destroying my thyroid would essentially get rid of the Hashimoto's.

What I didn't realize was that RAI wasn't treating the underlying autoimmunity.

It was destroying the thyroid.

And once my thyroid could no longer produce enough hormone, I would need thyroid hormone replacement for the rest of my life.

That's a very different thing.

And here's the part that really gets me:

I eventually got my Hashimoto's into remission.

The autoimmune process could become quiet.

But the thyroid tissue that had been destroyed wasn't coming back.

So I still needed medication.

This is one of the reasons I'm so passionate about helping people understand the difference between managing the consequences of a condition and actually looking at what may be driving it.

Sometimes the treatment you receive can solve one problem…while creating a permanent consequence that you may not have fully understood when you made the decision.

I wish I had known then what I know now.

And that's exactly why I believe you should understand your options, ask questions, and advocate for yourself before making decisions about your health.

You deserve to understand what a treatment will actually do—not just what you're told it will do.

Question the system. Educate yourself. Advocate for yourself.

Your thyroid doesn't actually make the thyroid hor Your thyroid doesn't actually make the thyroid hormone your body uses most.

That sounds a little confusing, right?

Your thyroid primarily produces T4.

But T4 isn't the most active thyroid hormone. Your body has to convert T4 into T3, the active form that gets to work in your cells—helping regulate energy, metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, and so much more.

So what happens when that conversion doesn't happen efficiently?

Symptoms can arise.

And this is one reason I don't believe thyroid health should be reduced to a single lab value.

You can have T4 available in your bloodstream and still not be converting it into T3 as efficiently as your body needs.

So if you're feeling exhausted, struggling with your weight, feeling unusually cold, dealing with brain fog, or experiencing other symptoms of low thyroid function…don't automatically assume your thyroid is “fine” just because one number is normal.

There may be more to the story.

Question the system. Educate yourself. Advocate for yourself.
